Experience history in the Historic Story Inn
This “Story” was founded as a logging community in 1851 with the grant of a land patent from President Millard Fillmore to Dr. George P. Story.
Over time the community became a village, anchored by the general store and grist mill and expanding to include a saw mill, slaughterhouse and blacksmith shop. In late 1915, a fire wiped out the general store, only to be replaced with a 2-story structure which has stood the test of time.
Today the town of Story is Indiana’s premier country inn, and perhaps the best preserved example of a 19th Century village that survives in the American Midwest. The Story Inn, which owns the town as well as the business which occupied it, has taken steps to have the entire town listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This recognition is expected to occur in the Spring of 2019.
The town consists of 17.4 acres, dominated by • the general store (restaurant & tavern) • an old grain mill • saw mill • several barns • homes • gardens • fenced horse pastures and run-ins • orchards and out-buildings • multiple guest accommodations (rooms & private cottages).
The Story Inn is also perhaps Indiana’s best example of a true farm-to-table restaurant. The wine list has received the Wine Spectator Award.
The town presently hosts a remarkable number of events each year, including the Indiana Wine Fair, Maple Syrup Festival, 40-50 weddings, corporate events, birthday parties, comedy shows, Indiana Trail Rider events, and much more ...
